The Pacific Coast Company served the West Coast from San Diego to Alaska and its rail systems although initially narrow gauge, were later incorporated include standard gauge. The Seattle line was the last railroad survivor of the Pacific Coast Company which was then incorporated into the Great Northern in 1965. Complementing the railroad, was a fleet of coastwise steamers which dominated California's north-south transporation in the 19th Century.
Overall, the extensive transportation empire reached its zenith in 1915 with rail feeders and a fleet of almost 80 steamships ranging along the California Coast and also serving Alaska.
