It was used extensively for troop movements and the conveyance of materials and particularly the coveyance of steel pipes in connection with PLUTO (Pipe Under The Ocean) a submarine petrol supply for the Allied armies. After the war, the line suffered mixed fortunes but was eventually acquired by enthusiast groups in 1972 and continues to operate successfully to the present day.
